OTM: 9/11 Museum

I remember when 9/11 happened, I was in the 1st grade frantic as I saw the second tower fall on national television. I didn't quite grasp how big of a deal it was until I got older. I took it as more of a movie type of feel, I knew something bad had happened but it just didn't feel real. As I got older I realized the severity of the issue.

For me having a museum to revisit the history of the carnage, gives a sense of closure. If I had family involved in the devastating attack I would love to visit and pay my respects. Hell, I want to visit now just to see how America has built itself back up. I love how Gladstone makes you visualize the museum and gives you a feel for it .

Physical- The museum was built where the towers fell, and opened 10 years later to the public.

Physiological- The museum plays a huge role in memorializing the lives lost in the attack, and also giving closure to those who witnessed, or family's that were effected.

Social- 9/11 was so powerful, and it brought are country together for the first time in a long time. This is the feeling you get when you enter the 9/11 museum, Togetherness.

Cultural- Culture is a touchy topic. Muslims were discriminated against after the attack. We needed to ALL be together as one after such a huge attack on American soil.

Temporal- 10 years after the attack, the museum was opened and it gave people different opportunities to look at it. Some where upset it even opened, others wanted more knowledge, and some just wanted closure for their loved ones.

  1. Howard,

Hearing you describe the 9/11 Museum gives me chills in a way because I almost lost one of my family members in the horrific tragedy. He was on his way to work on the subway and happen to be running late. Anyway, when the plane hit they immediately stopped the subway because they thought it was Cessna (small plane) but once they found it was a jet then they had to exit quickly. I don't personal know what he was going through that day that his own building crumbled to the ground. I didn't really understand what was happening either but all I know is was tragic and even reliving that same day by watching videos online is still painful to see people jumping from buildings and such. R.I.P. to all those who were involved.

I agree with you that the Museum is a great symbol of respect and piece of history for people to learn more information and gain a deeper understanding of what actually occurred that devastating day. I think this does kind of give people who had family involved a sense of closure after 14 years and I do say "kind of" because those individuals are never going to forget what happened to their family on that tragic day but they can have some further knowledge. Also I think that it shows a sign of respect noting that we as Americans have not forgotten about them and the distraught they witnessed and it shows we are rebuilding America for the better!

  2. I love these thoughts. I definitely agree that the museum gives the opportunity for closure. I also think that it's an important tool for the remembrance of the day.
